We like “The App Show” (a web talk show featuring interviews and news about iPhone apps).
The two co-hosts, Steve Bostedor (author of VNCScan and “all-around gadget geek”) and Dave Buchanan (Owner of Coefficient Media and “all-around AV geek”) are consistent and informative (if not a wee bit dry – forgiveable in this instance because they clearly know their stuff). There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles or big name sponsors here (it’s the poor man’s “Diggnation“), but it is a really solid show that does what it sets out to do (intensify your orgasmic lust for your iPhone).
They have a podcast as well as a web show. This episode features an interview with Murat Aktihanoglu from Centrl.com discussing his new iPhone app that informs you of interesting social events and merchandiser deals and discounts based on your location. Great interview.
Topics:
- Bummer that back ground notifications are only one-way. Bad for apps like Loopt and BrightKite.
- Murat Aktihanoglu from Centrl.com says that they are able to still do interesting stuff in the background using pings
- Segway into interview SKype
- What is the Centrl network?
- Is this only for the iPhone or are other phones also supported?
- Are you disappointed to see the lack of background application support in 3.0?
- What are you guys doing to still give a constant experience despite this?
- How do you differentiate yourselves from BrightKite or Loopt?
- Do you have any plans that will exploit the new features in the updated OS?
- Where can we learn more about your app?
- Google MapKit allows developers to use Google Maps within their applications. No longer need to bring your own maps
- Safari now has location awareness that is available to web app developers. This is HUGE!
- Could the GameKit be used to geolocate other iPhone users? “Who’s near me” kind of apps
- Is 30 frames per second VGA considerably better than what jailbroken apps can deliver on the 3G?
- iphonevideorecorder.com claims only 15fps. does it by flipping the camera on and off quickly.
- Interesting feature in their app for 3.0 – iPhone Video Recorder 3.0 has a new interesting feature, you may turn off iPhone screen while the recording is going on
- Should we have a contest to nail the date that the iPhone dev team will jailbrake the 3Gs?
- According to the iPhone Blog, that error encountered when re-downloading an app on the iPhone turns out to just be a problem with multiple accounts
- The 3GS also has longer battery life
- MMS Isn’t immediately available on AT&T because they need to manually remove the “opt-out” for MMS on each iPhone customers account.
- According to The iPhone Blog, Apple’s pre-order supply of 3GS phones have been depleted for a couple of weeks.
