We all, at some point in our lives, have rambled on far beyond helping our cause to the point of hurting it when we should’ve just kept quiet.
The other night on “The Daily Show” Jon Stewart expressed his confusion at Governor Mark Sanford’s inability to “zip it” in the face of an ongoing scandal that is still in the headlines because the Governor won’t… zip it.
In an interview with The Associated Press last week, Governor Mark Sanford revealed personal (and embarrassing) details of his affair with his “soul mate” (as he calls the woman with whom he had an affair) including the number of other women he has “crossed the line” with and the hot urges of his manly loins.
Stewart deftly explains with caring detail why Sanford should adopt a new tactic of silence.
Now is a good time to offer the following sentiments about the effectiveness of silence:
“Do not speak unless you can improve the silence“ (Proverbs)
“Silence is a source of great strength.” (Lao Tzu)
“Silence is the true friend that never betrays.” (Confucius)
“Silence is sometimes the answer.” (Estonian Proverb)
“See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…we need silence to be able to touch souls.“ (Mother Teresa)
Jon Stewart offers the wayward Governor his own timeless words of wisdom on how to handle his insatiable and self-destructive need to talk:
“Shut the f%#@k up!”
We’re going to have to co-sign with Stewart 100-percent here. The governor should take Stewart’s advice and remember:
“One STFU in the hand is worth two in the bushes.”
(free tee shirt to the person who gives the best definition of that quote)
